Chapter 48: The Rail

Edith Marie Donohue was born at ten past four in the morning, three weeks early and furious about it.

Cade did not leave my side for any of it.

He stood by the bed in a wedding shirt gone soft with sweat, with my hand crushed in both of his.

Every time I swore at him he said, "Yes, you're right," and I loved him and wanted to kill him.

Ginny sat in the hallway with Bree and forty bikers in black suits.

The nurses had given up asking them to keep their voices down.

The deputy, I was told afterward, had brought coffee for the whole floor.

When it was over, the room went quiet.

A tiny, red, outraged person lay on my chest with a head of dark hair and her father's jaw.

She opened her eyes, and they were grey-green.

"Hello," I whispered. "Hello. It's you."

Cade made a sound I will never forget.

It was a long, shaking breath with a name in it.

He sat down on the edge of the bed because his knees had gone.

He put one finger into her hand, and she closed it round him so hard that he laughed and wept at once.

"Look at her," he said. "Willa. Look at her."

"I am."

"She's got your eyes," he said.

"She's got your temper."

"She's got Edie's name."

"She's got everybody's name," I said. "She's going to be impossible."

He bent and kissed my forehead, and kissed the top of her head, and stayed there with his face against both of us.

At six they let the first visitors in, two at a time.

Ginny came first.
