Chapter 10: The Call

I made the call from the ridge above the mill, where the signal was clean.

Rafe stood three steps behind me with his arms folded and a rifle slung over one shoulder.

He didn't tell me to hurry.

He didn't tell me to stop.

The number rang four times.

"Hello?" said a dry, tired voice.

I knew it better than I knew most voices.

It had read me my father's will in a room that smelled of lilies.

"It's Calla," I said.

The silence was so long I thought the line had dropped.

"Oh, thank God," said my father's lawyer, and his voice broke in the middle. "Calla. Oh, child. Where are you?"

"Somewhere safe. I can't say."

"Are you hurt?"

"Some. I'm fine."

"I thought you were dead. They said the car, the creek. Dorian wept at the press conference."

"Dorian lied."

"Yes," he said slowly. "I've started to think so. Listen to me, there's very little time. He's filed a petition in chancery court."

"For what?"

"To declare you unfit to manage your affairs. He has a doctor's letter, two pages, and a deputy's report."

"The deputy was in on it."

"I'm afraid he is. The hearing is in six days. If the judge signs it, Dorian controls your father's whole estate as your guardian. The birthday won't matter."

I looked at the valley.

Forty days had become thirty-one.

Now it was six.

"What happens if I walk in?" I asked.

"To the hearing?"

"Before it."

He was quiet.

"There is the memorial gala," he said slowly. "The night before. At the Caruthers Grand, your father's flagship. Dorian has invited the board, half the bench, the whole press corps. It's his coronation, Calla."
