Chapter 16: Lake House
Dorian walked out through the middle of ten bikers with the doctor behind him.
Nobody touched him.
There were cameras in the lobby, and a night guard on the phone to the police, and Otis had already told the club what they were allowed to do in public.
At the elevator Dorian turned.
"The lake house," he said to me, lightly. "Sunrise. Come alone, and he gets a doctor. Come with that rabble and he gets an accident."
The doors closed on his smile.
I stood with my hands shaking.
"He means your father's place," Otis said. "On the water."
"Yes."
"You know the ground."
"I grew up on it," I said. "I know every board."
Mabel arrived at one in the morning in the club van, in her nurse's shoes, with a bag over each arm.
"Don't tell me to stay home," she said.
"I wasn't going to," I said.
We spread the Foundation's old site plan across the conference table, and I pointed.
The long driveway ran through the front gate to the house.
The back lawn ran down to a boathouse on the water.
"That's where he'd put a man he didn't want upstairs," I said. "The lower room has a steel door. My father kept the engine parts down there."
"Alarm?" Otis said.
"A code on the boathouse panel. My father's birthday, March ninth. He thought it was clever."
Otis looked at me for a moment.
"I misjudged you," he said.
"Everybody did."
By four we were on the road.
The club went up the front drive at five, in a line, with every headlight on and every engine open, and stopped at the gate.
I heard them from the trees at the edge of the lake, a thunder I felt in my teeth.
Two men with flashlights ran out of the house toward the gate.
I went the other way, through the cedar, with Otis behind me and a flashlight in my fist.
