Chapter 20: Alive
The silence in that ballroom was the loudest sound I have ever heard.
Three hundred people stood among round tables and white roses.
A chandelier burned over the dance floor, and a banner behind the stage said IN LOVING MEMORY OF VERNON CARUTHERS.
Dorian stood at the microphone with a glass in his hand.
The smile stayed on his face a moment longer than his color did.
"Calla," he said, in the voice of a man who has found a lost child. "Oh, thank God."
He came down the steps with his arms open.
"Don't," I said.
It carried to the back wall.
He stopped.
"Darling, you're not well," he said, gently, for the room. "You've been missing for two weeks. Everyone, please, she's confused. We have a doctor here."
The doctor stood up from table one, in a dinner jacket, with his leather bag in his hand.
Heads turned.
Someone at the back whispered, "She does look thin."
I walked down the middle aisle between the tables.
I kept my chin up, and I didn't hurry.
My burned arm was bare, and the bandage was white against the green silk.
"My name is Calla Caruthers," I said.
I stopped at the foot of the stage.
"I'm twenty-five years old. My father died four months ago, and two weeks ago I walked out of my wedding, because the man I was marrying whispered something in my ear."
"She is delusional," Dorian said, to the room, to the judge at table four, to the board chair beside her. "You can hear it."
"Then let's hear it," I said.
I looked up at the booth at the back of the ballroom, where a young man's face glowed blue over a console.
