Chapter 12: The Letter
I stayed until he woke.
Rowan opened his eyes at seven and saw me still there, and his whole face changed.
He pulled me down for a kiss that tasted of sleep and coffee neither of us had drunk.
At eight there was a knock on the loft door.
A black car idled at the curb below.
The old lawyer with the cane stood on the roof in a gray coat, holding a garment bag.
He didn't look at the loft or at either of us.
"Mr. Willoughby's gardener," he said. "I brought the suit."
"I thought it wasn't until two," Rowan said.
"It is. But Ms. Dacre's people visited my office again last night, and I have decided Mr. Willoughby's wishes cannot wait until the meeting."

"To me," Rowan said. "Are you sure?"
"I am sure."
Rowan took the envelope.
He turned it over.
The wax broke with a small dry sound.
He unfolded the letter and began to read aloud, because his hands were so unsteady he needed to hear it.
"Dear Rowan. If you are reading this, I couldn't tell you in person, and for that I'm sorry."
He swallowed.
"Thirty-five years ago I loved a woman who cleaned offices at night. My father forbade it. I was a coward, and I let her go."
