Chapter 15: Unit 214

Rowan's POV

I walked until I ended up where my feet had been heading all morning.

My mother's grave was in a cemetery off Woodhaven Boulevard, under a flat stone I had paid for in installments.

I stood there in the garden jacket I hadn't changed and said nothing for a long time.

I took out my phone to call her and put it away again.

I had nothing to say that wasn't either an apology or the same accusation.

She hadn't argued, and that was what kept turning over in me.

I had wanted her to argue.

I had wanted her to say it wasn't her fault, so I could be right to leave.

She said she would have paid her if she'd known.

I believed that, too, and it didn't help.

My phone rang at ten past twelve.

It was a number I didn't know.

"Is this Rowan?" A man's voice, slow and out of breath. "I'm the night guard from the lobby. We met on Sundays."

"I know who you are."

"I got your number off your mother's old locker form. I shouldn't have it. I wanted you to hear this from me."

I sat down on the grass beside the stone.

"The lady in the cream blazer came down this morning," he said. "Ms. Clifford. She asked me about your mother. Then she took me up to the twelfth floor and gave me gold coins and told me to pay the collections office."

"What?"

"I just came from there. It's paid. Sixteen thousand two hundred, all of it, and the man stamped it in front of me. I have the receipt in my hand."

I couldn't speak.

"She told me not to say anything to you," he said. "I'm not good at that. Your mother left me a cup of tea every night for eleven years. I wasn't going to keep this quiet."
