Chapter 16: The Board

Eleanor's POV

At two minutes to two, I carried Edmund's ledger into the boardroom against my ribs.

The table had been cleared of coffee cups.

Fourteen directors sat around it, and a gallery of shareholders filled the chairs along the glass wall.

Brandt's people sat on the river side: the thin lawyer, and beside him a gray-haired woman who was their managing partner.

Geoffrey sat at the head, upright and pale, in a fresh jacket over yesterday's shirt.

And in the chair at his right, in her navy suit with her curls pinned back, sat Camille.

She looked up and smiled at me.

"I told security to hold her at the elevator," Geoffrey said to me in a low voice as I passed. "Counsel says she has the right to attend an open meeting until the board votes her out."

"Then we'll vote her out."

"After the first item."

I took the empty chair across from her and set the ledger on the table.

Several directors looked at it.

It was cracked brown leather, and nobody in that room had ever seen it.

"Ms. Clifford," Camille said warmly. "I'm so glad you came."

I didn't answer.

At one minute to two the door opened.

Rowan came in.

He wore his green work jacket, with clean hands and a stack of thin paper under his arm.

He hadn't brought a suit.

He walked the length of the room without looking at anyone else, and he stopped beside my chair.
