Chapter 23: Lady
The chest came to the roof at sunset.
Geoffrey had opened the warehouse where Camille's movers had stored my things, and he carried it up the stairs himself.
He set it on the garden table and stepped back.
It was a plain box of black oak, bound in iron, scarred by six centuries of customs officers.
Rowan stood beside me.
Geoffrey stood a little apart, near the orchids, with his hands in his pockets.
I lifted the lid and took out the folded linen on top.
I pressed the catch that Edmund's son had shown me, and the false bottom came up with a small dry sound.
The letter lay there flat, in a wrapper of waxed cloth.
I unwrapped it.
The paper had gone brown at the edges.
The seal was red wax pressed with a plain ring, and across the front, in a hand I had last seen in a ledger, he had written: Lady.

I broke the seal.
The page inside was small, covered edge to edge, and the ink was the color of tea.
I read it aloud, because I had gone six hundred years in silence and could not do it in silence any longer.
"My Lady. I am an old man now, and my hand shakes, so forgive the spelling.
"I have kept the books as I swore. Every year I wrote down what I owed you and every year I paid it. There are four ships now, and a house in the city, and my grandchildren are fat.
