Chapter 23: The Ring She Chose

"I don't have a ring," Nolan said.

His voice carried to the last table in the ballroom, and he did not lower it.

"I thought about buying one. I thought about the biggest one in the city. Then I thought you'd see a price tag and a man who picked for you again."

Somebody near the front started to cry.

"So I'm kneeling here with nothing," he said. "I'm not asking you to say yes tonight, with a hundred cameras on us. Tomorrow I'll put every ring in Pittsburgh on the kitchen island, and you'll pick the one you want."

"And if I pick none?"

"Then I'll ask you again next month, and the month after. I'm not going anywhere."

I looked at him on his knee, with the silver at his temples and his eyes wet and steady.

Six hundred people waited.

"Yes," I said. "To the question you're going to ask tomorrow."

The room came apart in noise.

I pulled him up by both hands and kissed him in front of all of it, and I did not care who saw.

The jeweler arrived at nine the next morning with two assistants and four locked cases.

They laid forty rings on a velvet cloth on the kitchen island.

Diamonds the size of grapes, emeralds, rubies, a yellow stone that glittered.
