Chapter 14: Ten in a Row
Willa's POV
At twenty weeks I could no longer reach the back of the oven without turning sideways.
The baker said it was the best advertisement the shop had ever had.
Stuart came in through the alley door at nine with a white envelope, and he did not say good morning.
"Sit," he said.
"I'm standing for the rye."
"Please sit."
I sat on the flour stool and put my hands on my belly.
"The pill from your napkin went to a hospital lab on Friday," he said. "A friend of the lawyer's ran it as a favor."
"And?"
"It isn't iron. It isn't a vitamin."
He gave me the page, and I read the first line twice.
It named a drug, then a dose, and then a sentence that I read to the end.
*Five times the strength of the tablet taken daily for contraception. Taken in pregnancy, it ends the pregnancy.*
"She gave this to me in my own old bedroom," I said.
"Yes."
"She sat on the bed and watched me take it."
"You did not swallow it."
"I got lucky because I didn't trust her."
My voice sounded odd.
"Rosalind did not want you to lose one baby," Stuart said. "She wanted you to lose both before I saw a scan."
"Is that a crime?" I asked.
"The lawyer says it is the first thing a prosecutor will want to hold," Stuart said. "The lab will sign a statement, and so will the pharmacy that filled her bottle."
"And the second thing?"
"Your face on the stairs, and what the camera saw behind it."
I put the page face down on my knee.
