Chapter 16: Ania Walks In

I ran to the window in a towel with my hair dripping down my back.

A silver car sat at the end of the long drive with its hazard lights blinking.

A thin figure in a green knit hat was walking up the gravel, one slow step at a time.

She had a cane in one hand and her sketchbook under the other arm.

She wasn't in a wheelchair.

"Matthias!" I screamed. "Matthias, she's walking!"

I don't remember the stairs.

I remember the cold gravel under my bare feet and the hospital driver holding up both hands.

"She signed out herself, ma'am, with the doctor's note," he said. "I only drove."

Ania stopped ten feet from me.

She was grey and hollow-cheeked, and she was grinning.

"Forty-one steps," she said. "I counted. Don't touch me, I'll fall over."

I touched her.

I wrapped both arms around her narrow shoulders and she fell over, into me, and we ended up sitting on the driveway laughing and crying.

"You're soaking," she said into my towel.
