Chapter 23: Two Hundred

The officer arrived at four fifty-five in the same gray raincoat, with the same tote bag, and stood by the door while Cal mopped.

Frank held the clipboard against his chest.

He had put on a tie.

At five exactly he wrote 5:00 in the start column.

Cal wrung the mop out properly and went at the boards around the ring.

He did the corners.

He did the bathrooms, and he did the bag room, and he did the gum under the benches without being told.

The officer watched him with her hands folded.

At five-thirty Ray came in the side door and took his usual place on the long bench, though it was a Monday.

He didn't speak.

He took off his Dragons cap and held it on his knee, and the gray hand rested beside it.

At six, Frank looked at his watch.

Then he looked at the clock above the desk, and then at the pen in his hand.

"Ellender," he said. "Put down the mop."

Cal put down the mop.

He stood in the middle of the floor with his sleeves rolled and water on his shoes.

Frank wrote in the stop column.

6:00.

He wrote 200 in the total column, and he initialed it, and his hand was not steady.

"Two hundred hours," Frank said, and his voice went.

"Forty years I ran the junior class. I never thought I'd be this proud of a man for scrubbing a toilet."
