Chapter 16: The Boathouse
"Stay in the bay," Torben said. "Don't touch the car."
"Where are you going?"
"To put this in my security man's hand. Two minutes."
He went out the side door with the tracker closed in his fist, and the door thumped shut behind him.
I stood in the bay with my arms around my belly.
The boathouse smelled of wet rope and old paint.
Canoes hung from the rafters, and a rack of oars leaned against the wall by the lake door.
Behind me, the lake door rattled on its track.
I turned around.
It rolled up four feet, and a pair of wet legs ducked under it, then a body in a dark rain jacket with the hood up.
He straightened and pushed the hood back.
Lance's hair was plastered flat, and he hadn't shaved in days.
A white boat bobbed in the slip behind him, tied to a cleat with its engine ticking.
"A thousand feet," he said. "I measured it on my phone. I'm nine hundred and ninety-eight from the house, if you go by the water."
