Chapter 18: Broken Glass

The sword stopped an inch from my shoulder.

The guard who held it stared up the stairs at the nineteen burning torches and the man with burned hands leading them.

"Put it down," Perrin Ash said, in a perfectly friendly voice. "I've carried a lot of Fallen over that moor, and not one of them cared for being burned."

"We were told you were dead by Thursday," I said.

"It's Wednesday." He grinned. "I like to be early."

The guards looked at the Elder.

The Elder looked at the Council that had just split in front of him.

He looked at the pages in the old man's hands.

Then he looked at seven hundred faces that were no longer afraid of him.

He let go of his daughter's wrist.

He did it without thinking, the way you let go of a rope that has begun to burn.

Odette stood alone in the open space before the glass with the Fallen knife in her fist.

She was looking at the Mirror.

It was still showing the river.

It showed her face under the hood, over and over.

"No," she said.

She ran.

I was already moving.

My legs moved before my head did.

I crossed the stone in a dozen strides with the hem of my gown in my fist.

She reached the frame first and drew back the knife.

I caught her arm on the downswing.

We hit the glass together, hard, and the whole black frame shuddered.

"Get off me!" Odette shrieked.

"You can't break it."

"I can break anything!"
