Chapter 10: Cedar and Ice
The sauna was my idea, and I gave all the orders.
I was the one who said it at ten that night, in the kitchen, with the dishes still wet.
"Show me how it works," I said.
Stellan looked up from the table.
"The sauna?" he asked.
"Your mother wants me in the heat. I'm going tonight, and you're coming with me."
"Elin," he said.
"Unless you'd rather not," I said.
"I'd rather," he said, so fast that I smiled.
We went down the hundred and ten steps in the dark with a lantern.
The wind had dropped.
The stars were out over the lake, hard and white, and the ice groaned low out in the black.
In the anteroom he lit the stove, and the stones in the sauna began to tick.
He undressed on the bench without looking at me.
He folded his clothes in a neat pile and stood with his back turned, in a towel.
I took off my coat and sweater and jeans, and stood in my underwear with my arms crossed.
"Turn around," I said.
He turned.
His eyes went over me slowly, from my feet to my hair, and I saw his throat move.
"Take off the towel," I said.
He did.
I had seen him in my bed.
I had not seen him standing in firelight, with the long lean line of his body and the scars on it.
He was fully hard.
He did not try to hide it.
I walked past him into the sauna with my head up, and I heard him follow.
It was a small cedar room with two benches, one above the other, and a stove of black stones in the corner.
