Chapter 7: What Dad Brought
Hallie's screenshot showed a post in the north campus floor chat, and under it, a thread of eleven replies.
Dexter had written it at midnight.
"Please don't judge my brother. He's not well, and he's been lying to my parents for a long time. He faked a medical emergency to get money out of them. I'm doing my best to protect him."
The replies were mostly hearts and sad faces.
"Do they believe him?" I asked.
"Some do," Hallie said. "His roommates don't. One of them said he'd seen you at the door that day, and that you looked like a ghost."
"Why are you telling me?"
"Because I walked past you in that dining hall holding a suitcase," she said, "and I asked if you'd miss your flight. I should have asked if you'd eaten."
She slid onto the stool next to mine.
"I'll have whatever he's having," she told Norman.
Norman gave her three pieces of toast and a stare.
She ate all three.
We were still at the counter when the bell over the door rang again, at ten past two.
My father stood in the entrance with his flannel jacket buttoned wrong.
It was a six-hour drive from home. He must have left before dawn.
Norman looked at me, a question in his face.
"It's fine," I said. "Dad, sit down."
He took the stool on my other side, and Hallie politely turned to study the pie case.
Dad set a manila folder on the counter.
"The hospital bill," he said. "It's paid. All of it. I put it on a card this morning and I'll pay the card myself."
"Thank you."
"And this." He took out a cashier's check. "It's four thousand five hundred dollars. It's the next three months from both of us. Your mother and I split it. I called her."
