Chapter 22: Darian Falls
My brother ran.
He did not run well, because he had never needed to.
He gathered his embroidered coat in both fists and made for the side door behind the dais, shouting for his guards as he went.
"Kindle! Stop them! Kindle, all of you!"
The six guards by the wall looked at one another.
They were ordinary men in royal tabards, and none of them had a line of grey on his skin.
The word was a sound to them and nothing else.
One of them took a slow step forward, and then stopped.
"Your Highness," he said, with some embarrassment. "I don't think that works on us."
Darian shoved him aside.
The side door was already open, and in it stood the man in the leather coat from Ashby.
He had come up through the servants' passage with a dozen others at his back.
He held the iron tent peg in one hand.
"Morning, Your Grace," he said pleasantly.
Darian tried to push past him, and four large men from Ashby simply stood in the way.
