Chapter 15: Measure Twice

I read my father's notebook at my own kitchen table with the lights off.

It took me two hours, because I kept stopping.

Every page had a date, a site, a number, and a name.

On the twelfth of October he had written: "Bracket 7 north deck. Not inspected, signed as done. Told the office."

Under it: "Told Mrs. Thurston herself. She does the books. She said she'd handle it."

On the fifteenth: "Still not handled. Asked again. She said I should be grateful for the work."

On the seventeenth: "Copying everything. If something happens, Mara gets the box."

I put my hand over my mouth.

The last item in the box was a white envelope with my name on it.

"Mara,

If you're reading this, I didn't get to tell you in person, and I'm sorry.

I reported a bad bracket and the owner's wife told me to keep quiet. I'm keeping copies, because I don't trust her.

If anything happens to me, it wasn't my mistake. I clip in every time.

Don't let anybody hand you a casserole and call it an apology.

Measure twice, kid. I love you.

Dad"

I read it standing up, and I read it sitting on the floor.

I did not hear the doorbell the first time.

My phone lit up on the tile.

It was a text from Cal: "I'm on your street. Say no and I turn around."

I stared at it.

He had flown after me.

I crawled to the door on my knees and opened it.

He stood on the porch with a duffel bag and the look of a man who had slept in a seat.

"May I come in?" he said.

"You asked."

"I said I would."

I couldn't speak.

I held out the letter.

He read it standing on the mat, and when he reached the end, he folded it carefully along its old creases and handed it back with both hands.
