Chapter 8: Four Million Views

I read Estelle's post three times.

Then I woke Cal by sitting up too fast.

"What is it?"

I handed him the phone.

He read it, and his face went still.

"Are those your pearls?"

"They were my grandmother's. She wore them in her wedding photo."

"Do you have the photo?"

I did.

It was in a frame on my hallway wall, and in my cloud, in a folder called Gran.

I opened it.

My grandmother stood on the courthouse steps in 1961, in a plain suit, with the same pearls at her throat.

The date was written in pencil on the white border.

I posted it, and I wrote one line under it.

"These are my grandmother's pearls. She was married in them in 1961. I am wearing them right now. I did not steal anything. I am in Italy, and the police can find me here."

I attached a second photo, taken in Cal's bathroom mirror, with the pearls at my neck.

"That's brave," Cal said.

"It's accurate."

"It's a very good photo."

"Don't."

He raised both hands.

By the time I had showered, the post had four thousand shares.

By noon, the replies had changed.

The cousins who had cheered on Friday now wrote to me privately.

"Mara, I'm so sorry. I didn't know the whole story."

"Estelle told us you were fine with it. You were fine with it, weren't you?"

"I'm embarrassed. Can I buy you a coffee when you're back?"

The softball team captain sent a long message and ended it with a crying face.

I did not answer any of them.

At two o'clock a girl I barely knew sent me a link.

"Have you seen the clip?"
