Chapter 13: The Levee Road

Armen's POV

I drove my mother home first, because she was cold and had already started to hum.

The housekeeper met us at the steps and took her by the elbows, and Shushan let herself be led indoors without a word.

She had said it to the stone for six years.

She had never said it to my face.

Talin stood in the yard with the wet flowers still in her hand.

"Where did it happen?" she said.

It was the first thing she asked me, and I understood it.

She wanted something she could stand on.

"The levee road," I said.

"Take me there."

The levee road runs along the Kings River east of Kingsburg, a gravel track on top of a dirt bank, with the river on one side and a drainage canal on the other.

In January the cottonwoods were bare and the water was high and brown.

I stopped the car at a stretch of new guardrail, because the old rail was somewhere in the canal.

"There," I said.

She got out and stood at the rail in her wet coat.

I stood a few steps off, where she would not have to look at me unless she chose.
