Chapter 20: Trndez
Trndez fell on a Tuesday, and by dusk three hundred people stood in the yard of St. Sarkis in their coats.
Every one of them held a candle in a paper cup.
The fire pit in the middle of the yard had been built up since noon, with orchard prunings and old pallets, and the priest walked around it three times with his censer in the cold.
When he lit it, the whole yard went gold.
Young couples lined up on the far side to jump the flames, as they do every year, and the children screamed and cheered.
My husband walked in through the gate with me on his arm.
He wore the gray overcoat and the black glove.
His mother walked in front of us, in her good black dress, with her chin up, as she had said she would.
Nobody turned a chair away from us here, because there were no chairs.
They turned their heads instead.
