Chapter 13: The Belt
Judah crossed the cabin in three strides and put Tate flat on the bunk with a forearm across his throat.
The phone fell and skidded under the table.
"Weeks," Judah said. "You've known for weeks."
Tate did not fight.
He lay under the arm with his eyes steady on Judah's face and his breath slow.
"The last Sunday of September," he said. "Your phone was charging on the piano in the choir room."
"You went through my phone."
"It was lit up on the piano. It was a picture of my window."
Judah's arm eased a little.
"I scrolled to the Fridays and looked at my father's arm for ten minutes," Tate said.
His voice was flat and careful.
"The principal never saw it. Neither did the preacher. Nobody in this county ever had a picture."
"I didn't know what I was looking at," Judah said.
"You knew."
Judah's breath caught.
"You saw the stripes, preacher boy." Tate's eyes were very green. "You watched thirty-one Fridays from a plywood box."
His voice cracked on the next part.
"And you never once crossed that yard."
