The belt came down across Tate's back for the ninth time, hard and sharp.
He stood at the kitchen table with both hands flat on the oilcloth and his shirt folded on the chair.
The overhead light hummed.
On the stove the kettle was ticking as it cooled, because his father always put the water on first.
"A boy hit you in the lunchroom," the sheriff said behind him, quiet and reasonable.
"Yes, sir."
"In front of the whole school," his father said.
"Yes, sir."
"And I had to hear it from the coach at the Rotary."
The belt came down.
Tate's knees locked, and the oilcloth crumpled under his fingers.
"Who was it?"
"Nobody, sir," Tate said.
"Nobody hits the sheriff's son," his father said.
"No, sir."
His father waited.
