"No," I said.
Soren blinked.
"No, you don't get a say?"
"No, I'm not saying the word."
I crossed the study and stopped close enough to smell the smoke in his coat.
"And I'm not giving you orders either, so stop bracing for them."
"Then what do you want?"
"I want you to ask me."
His brows came together.
"Ask you what?"
"What you want," I said. "You've spent four years hiding what you want from everyone, and the first time someone put it in your hands, you called it a leash."
"It is a leash."
"It's a door," I said. "I know a bit about those."
He looked at me for a long moment.
The fire popped, and he flinched, and hated that he'd flinched.
"I don't know how," he said.
"Try badly."
His jaw worked.
He looked at the carpet, then at the window, then at the bandage on his thumb.
