Chapter 14: Terms
Soren read the decree from the top of the main staircase at eight in the morning.
Every cousin, aunt and servant in the MacMahon house stood in the hall below.
I stood one step down from him and to his left, because that was where I had put myself, and he had not argued.
"By the authority of the den's head," he read, "the Midwinter Keeping is ended in the house of MacMahon."
A murmur went round the marble.
"No rabbit will be taken. No tithe will be collected from the Hollow, this year or any year after."
The murmur turned into a rumble.
"The forty thousand owed by the Birch family is struck. The warren owes this house nothing."
He folded the paper and looked at the room.
"That is all."
For a second, nobody moved.
Then a cousin pushed forward from the back, a heavy man with a gold signet ring and a wine-flushed neck.
"You can't," he said. "The tithe pays for half this house."
