Chapter 20: Winter Night
In the dark, a hand closed on my arm.
It was small and cold, and it belonged to Fenella.
"The service stair," she hissed. "Now."
"The Hunt begins when the lights fail on a new moon," Linden's voice said, from somewhere near the dais. It was pleasant and unhurried. "It is the clause, Elders. I only exercised my right as speaker."
"You are suspended," someone shouted.
"And yet I am still a MacMahon, and so is the quarry's keeper." Silence. "Let him prove his hold."
The old elder's voice came out of the black on my left, thin and furious.
"He has trapped the Council in its own law."
His cane found my shoulder.
He leaned close, and I smelled camphor and old wool.
"Run where you want us to follow, girl," he breathed. "Custom says the Council trails the quarry on foot, with lanterns, and may not interfere. Give us something to see."
I understood.
I let go of Fenella and pulled the green dress over my head in the dark.
