By noon the story was on every phone in the city.
*Chairman Ousted. Wife Releases Tape. Assistant Confesses.*

I read both on the steps of the Stockwell building, with Quincy on one side and Preston on the other, and a hundred cameras pointed up at me.
I had never been looked at like that.
It was not pity.
It was not disgust either.
It was the look people give a thing they were wrong about, and are not sure yet that they were wrong.
A black car pulled up at the curb, and six women got out.
I knew all of them.
I had sat across from every one of them at a dozen luncheons, with a smile pinned to my face.
The woman in the green jacket walked up first.
"Suzette," she said. Her voice shook. "We want to say something."
"Then say it."
"We were wrong."
The cameras clicked.
"We said terrible things about you. We said them for years. We didn't know the truth."
"There was nothing to know," I said. "You didn't need the truth. You needed me to be something other than a woman it happened to."
She flinched.
"You called me used goods at a charity lunch," I said. "You said Preston had a lucky escape. You said nobody would want me. You said it loud enough for me to hear, because you wanted me to hear it."
"We're sorry."
"You're sorry because he fell."
"That's not..."
"If Kenneth had never been caught, you would be at my table next week asking after my health."
