Chapter 18: The Folder
Aksel's POV
I built the folder at my desk in the boathouse loft, at night, with the lamp on and the river black in the round window.
It took me four evenings.
I had expected it to be hard to find the pages.
It was not.
My aunt kept everything.
She had kept it for thirty years in a locked cabinet in the dean's office, in plain manila folders with the year on each tab in her slanted hand.
The key hung on a ring in her desk drawer, and I did not have to steal it.
I only had to ask the registrar for the committee minutes, and she gave them to me without a question, because I was a Kvale.
I laid them out on the desk.
Every set of minutes had a typed page clipped to it.
Every typed page had a word spelled wrong.
*Occured.*
It was in the first memo, about the boy from Albert Lea.
It was in the second, about the girl in the green scarf.
It was in a third I had never seen, about a boy who left Halden four years before I came.
It was in a fourth, and a fifth, back to the year before my mother died.
I read through them twice.
Seven students in nineteen years had been put out of Halden on my aunt's page.
Not one of the pages was signed.
I put my hands over my face and stayed like that for a while.
At eleven I found the note.
It was in the second case file, folded small, tucked behind a blank sheet at the back of the minutes.
It was a single page of lined notebook paper, written in ballpoint in a hand I did not know.
On the outside, in small careful letters, it said: *To whoever reads this.*
I unfolded it with fingers that did not feel like mine.
*I am leaving on Tuesday. I don't want anything. The woman at the registrar said you never see these files again, so I wanted somebody to know I didn't do it.*
