Chapter 9: She Starts It

At sunrise I called the cemetery office in Newark from my bed.

I paid the caretaker with my own card to replant every flower and put a camera on the post.

Nobody had ever let me buy anything for her before.

When I hung up, Nico was sitting up in the chair with his hair flat on one side and his eyes on me.

"It's tomorrow," I said.

He didn't answer.

I got out of bed and crossed the room in my sleep shirt.

I stopped between his knees and put my hands on either side of his face.

"I'm awake," I said. "I know it's me. Tell me you want this."

"God, Livia." His hands closed on the backs of my thighs. "I've wanted this since you made me wait outside that lab."

I pulled the shirt over my head and dropped it on the floor.

His breath left him all at once.

He looked at me for a long moment, and I watched him decide not to rush.

"Come here," he said, and pulled me down onto his lap.

I straddled him on the chair and kissed him until his hands shook.

I pulled his T-shirt off and put my mouth on his throat, then his shoulder, then the scar near his collarbone.

He tasted like salt and soap.

His cock was hard against me through his jeans, and I rolled my hips down on it once, slowly.

"Fuck," Nico said, low, into my hair.

"Say it again."

"Fuck, Livia."

I took his hand off my hip and put it between my legs.

He found me wet and slid two fingers in, and I gripped his shoulders and made a noise I had never made in my father's house.

"That's it," he said. "Show me."
