Chapter 10: Wrong Bench
"Sal," I said.
He didn't move.
The cold wind off the lake pushed his windbreaker flat against his chest.
Hugo had stepped back from me, and his hands hung open at his sides.
"Aili's Tahoe," Sal said.
"Sal."
"That's what you said. A casserole."
His voice was calm in a way that scared me more than shouting.
"I stood on that porch and looked at his plates, and you lied to my face, Vee."
"I was going to tell you."
"When?"
"When I knew what to say."
He turned his head toward Hugo, and then, because of his neck, he turned his whole body.
"Hello, Hugo."
"Sal."
It was the first time they had spoken in nine years.
I watched my brother's face and saw nothing in it at all.
"You look like a captain," Sal said.
"Sal, I."
"Don't."
He lifted his fist and showed us the tickets, crushed into a ball.
"A guy from the front office dropped these at the rink Friday. Two seats behind the glass. A note from Hedberg: Bring your sister a surprise."
He opened his hand and the tickets fell.
"I thought it was a kindness."
Something cold went through me.
Harold had known.
He had put my brother in that parking lot.
"I came here ready to say thank you," Sal said. "You know what he did to me?"
He pointed at Hugo without looking.
"I can't turn my head. I can't remember a week of my own life. I can't skate."
He looked at me.
"And you put your mouth on him."
"He's not what you think."
