Chapter 19: Where Everyone Can See
He had me in front of the closet mirror before my front door had finished locking.
It was a tall, old, scratched mirror that came with the apartment.
It showed the two of us in the lamplight.
He was behind me, huge, his chest at my back, and I was in my work clothes with my glasses crooked.
"Look," he said.
"I'm looking."
"Look at what I see."
His hands came around my waist and slid slowly up my body, over the sweater, over my ribs.
His thumbs brushed the underside of my breasts.
In the glass I watched his beard graze my ear.
"Take it off," I said.
"What?"
"Everything. Slowly. In front of me."
He lifted my sweater off over my head.
He unhooked my bra and let it fall.
He cupped my breasts from behind and watched in the mirror as I leaned my head back on his shoulder.
"You're so beautiful," he said into my hair. "You don't know."
"Tell me."
"Your breasts. The way they fill my hands."
His thumbs rolled over my nipples.
"Your waist. That curve." One hand slid down to my belly. "Your hips, when you walk down the hall."
"Hugo."
"Your mouth, when you say my name."
I turned my head and he kissed me.
His beard rasped against my cheek, and his tongue slid against mine, and I reached up and gripped the back of his neck.
He was hard against my back, thick through his jeans, and I rubbed against it.
He undid the button of my jeans and slid them down my hips and I stepped out of them.
My underwear went with them.
I stood naked in front of the glass with the man I hated, and loved, and had stopped trying to name.
"One day," he said into my neck, "I told you I'd mark you where everyone can see."
"Yes."
"Is it soon yet?"
