Chapter 18: Pressure

Anselmo came out of surgery at 1:15 in the morning with a tube down his throat and a bandage the size of a book.

The surgeon, a tired woman in green, spoke to my mother because my mother was the one who stood up.

"The bullet missed his heart by a finger. He'll live."

"Good," Soledad said. "Then I can be angry at him properly."

His wife sat by the bed holding a hand that was not gold-watched anymore.

I stood in the doorway of the room and looked at my uncle's grey face and the mustache I had loved since I was six.

Joaquin touched the back of my elbow.

"He's alive because he fought for your voice," he said. "Go home and sit with that."

"I'm going to the yard."

"Ximena."

"Escamilla knows the book is somewhere Arriaga owns, and he has spent two days learning which trailer. Tonight he'll send a torch of his own."

He said nothing.

He picked up his cap.

At 2:30 a.m. the yard lights were off except for one, and twelve drivers stood in a ring around trailer seventeen with their tire irons.

The old foreman had brought an acetylene torch in the bed of his truck.

"Do you want me to do it, jefa?"
