Chapter 24: Vows at the Lake
They did not undress in the car, though it was close.
At one in the morning the villa stood dark behind the stone lions, and the gate swung open for them on its own.
Bai Ling got out of the passenger seat and stood on the gravel, with Meiyin's coat on her shoulders.
She turned her face up to the sky.
"Home," she said.
"Do you want to go in?"
"First, there is something I should like us to do.
If you will have it."
She held out her hand.
In the bedroom the bronze mirror was waiting, glowing very faintly green.
Meiyin took Bai Ling's hand and stepped through it into the warm sandalwood dark of the old bedchamber.
The red lanterns were lit, every one.
The rosewood bed stood in the middle of the room, hung with gold-crane silk, and on its low table lay two lengths of red cord.
Bai Ling had taken off the coat.
She stood before the table in the red qipao, and she looked at Meiyin with great seriousness.
"We were married in a courtyard like this, Wanyin and I.
I do not think I may marry you in the same way."
"No."
"So I would like to do it in a way that is only ours."
She picked up the cords and gave one to Meiyin.
"You may say what you wish.
I will say mine first."
She wound her end of the cord around her own left wrist, and held the other end up.
"I, Bai Ling, was a sword in a mirror.
I am a woman at a lake.
I choose Gu Meiyin, not as a promise, not as a duty, but because I woke up and found her warm.
I will cook her bad noodles and wash her suits and chase off anyone who makes her cry."
Meiyin laughed, and her eyes were wet.
She wound her end of the cord around her own wrist and tied it to Bai Ling's with a double knot.
"I, Gu Meiyin, bought a house for peace.
I got you.
I choose you, every day, in every room, whenever you're angry or scared or being ridiculous."
"Being ridiculous?"
"Often."
Bai Ling bit her lip, smiling.
"And I'll order you around only when you ask me to," Meiyin finished.
"I shall ask often."
"I know."
The red cord looped between their wrists.
Bai Ling set the white jade pin on the table beside the cords, where it could watch.
Then she kissed Meiyin, long and deep and certain.
They went to the bed tied by one wrist.
It was awkward and ridiculous and perfect.
Bai Ling's free hand found the zip of her own qipao and could not reach it.
Meiyin laughed into her mouth, and they unfastened it together.
The red silk slid off her shoulders.
Underneath she wore nothing at all.
Meiyin shed the gala dress and her heels, and for a moment they stood at the foot of the rosewood bed, looking.
