Chapter 11: Rooftop
Claire stood in the lobby in a gray coat with no makeup and her hair pulled back.
She looked ten years younger, and exhausted.
I came down in jeans and a sweater with my curls in a clip.
Declan stayed at the elevator with his arms crossed, and I told him to wait there.
"I'm not here to fight," Claire said.
"Good, because I haven't had breakfast."
"I owe you an apology."
"For the wine?"
"For the wine, and the salad, and the way I looked at you at dinner."
She swallowed.
"Terrence told me what to say."
"He said you were a gold digger and the family needed to put you in your place."
"And you believed him."
"I wanted to," she said. "It's easier."
The doorman pretended to polish the desk.
"The wine was his idea," Claire said.
"He handed me the glass and told me when."
"I did it."
"I'd like you to know that I thought about it afterward for two weeks and I didn't sleep."
I looked at her for a long moment.
"Okay," I said.
"Okay?"
"I don't forgive you yet. But I heard you."
