Chapter 19: The Night Before
The night before the vote, he ran me a bath.
He didn't ask.
He walked into the big bathroom with a towel over his shoulder and turned on the taps.
He poured something that smelled like cedar into the water.
"You've been standing for eleven days," he said. "Sit."
The tub was deep and old and white, big enough for two if one of them was careful.
I pulled the clip from my curls and dropped my robe.
He stripped without a word and got in first, then held out both hands and helped me down.
I sat between his knees with my back against his chest.
The water came up to my collarbone.
He took the cup from the edge and poured warm water over my hair.
He washed it slowly, his fingers working deep into my scalp.
I closed my eyes and let my head go heavy against his shoulder.
"I wrote it on the back of an envelope," he said.
"Your speech?"
