Chapter 24: Hands Off
He tried to drive with both hands on the wheel.
I watched him try.
At the first red light his right hand left the wheel and settled on my knee, under the lace.
At the second it slid up my thigh.
"Eyes on the road," I said.
"I'm looking."
"At me."
"The road is dark. You're lit."
The house stood on a quiet street of brick porches, with a lamp left burning in the front window.
It had green shutters and a wide step, and a wreath on the door that somebody had hung before we got there.
"Claire," Declan said. "She did the key."
He parked, came around, and opened my door.
Then he scooped me out of the seat.
"I can walk."
"I know. Humor me."
He carried me up the porch steps with the dress hanging down his arm.
He unlocked the door with two fingers and kicked it shut behind us.
The hall smelled of new paint and pine.
He set me down against the wall under the lamp and put both hands flat on either side of my head.
"Hello, Mrs. Brennan," he said.
"Hello."
"I've wanted to do this since the arch."
"Since before the arch."
"Since the car."
"Since the first night," he said, "and I've never once gotten used to it."
