The address in the gray notebook was a yellow brick bungalow in Cicero with a plastic Virgin Mary in the flower bed.
I rang the bell, and Scott stood one step behind me on the walk.
The man who opened the door was in his seventies and thin as a rake.
A clear tube ran from his nose to a green tank on wheels.
He looked at my hair first.
Then he looked at the freckles, and he put his hand on the door frame.
"I've waited seven years for you to knock," he said.
"Do you know who I am?"
"I know the color of you."
He stepped back and let us in.
The front room smelled of cough drops and old carpet.
On the mantel stood a photograph of a smiling woman in a church hat.
"My wife," he said. "Gone two winters. The envelope still comes."
"What envelope?"
"Twelve hundred dollars on the first of the month. Cash, in a plain sleeve, since the week it happened."
