The front window of the gallery had a deep ledge, and nothing had ever stood on it but a vase of dried grass.
I took the grass out at nine that night, after the last guest had gone, and set it on the floor.
Scott brought the stepladder from the supply closet and opened it beneath the window.
"Hold it," I said.
"I'm holding it."
"Both hands."
"Siobhan, I own a shipping company. I can hold a ladder."
"You own a shipping company with a suspended signing authority."
"For another seventy-nine days."
"I'm counting too."
He grinned up at me, and I climbed.
I unfolded the paper lantern at the top.
It opened, ribs springing out, white and creased from the box.
I set the candle stub in its brass cup at the bottom and stood the cup on the ledge.
