The Chairman's Sunday lunch had twelve places and one absence.

Madam Ahn sat at her husband's left hand, in plain gray, with her hair done and her eyes carefully bright.

The newspapers had printed one sentence from Yeouido, and every relative at that table had read it.

We vote as she tells us.

Nobody mentioned it.

They talked about a wedding in Daegu, and the price of persimmons, and a cousin's new baby.

Seung-hwan sat beside me with his napkin folded and his back straight.

Halmoni sat across from us, with a bowl of rice before her.

Tae-seong was not at her right hand, because he had refused to come before the banquet.

"He will bring his own chopsticks," she had said. "He'd rather starve in a garage than be fed in that house."

Da-eun arrived last, as she never did.

She wore a pale coral dress and carried a long box tied with silk.

She bowed to the Chairman, to his wife, to Halmoni, and sat three seats from me.

"Chairman-nim," she said, when the soup had been cleared. "Forgive me."
