Chapter 7: The Gate in the Rain

I did not open the folder again.

At noon I took it to the Haneul Tower in a plain tote bag and asked at the forty-first floor desk for the heir.

His secretary looked at my face, picked up her phone and put me through at once.

Seung-hwan was at his glass desk, reading a report with a pen in his hand.

"Miss Jeon. You should have called."

"I would have, but I wanted a witness." I nodded to the secretary behind me. "Please stay."

She stayed, wide-eyed.

I set the folder on his desk, unopened, with its crest facing up.

"This came to my office by courier this morning. It is confidential and it has your family's seal."

"I haven't read it. I haven't photographed it. I would like you to hold it, since it is yours."

He looked at the folder.

Then he looked at me.

"Who sent it?" he asked.

"The courier said it came from this building," I said.

"There is no reason for you to have it."

"I agree," I said. "That is why I brought it back myself."

He slid the cover open with the end of his pen.

The photograph slipped out, and the deal sheet underneath it, and he saw both.

His gaze stayed on the picture for a long time.

"That's Tae-seong," he said.

"Yes."

"With you. At a food stall," he said.

"He was kind enough to take me for lunch. He's helping me with your grandmother."

I kept my voice level.

"If you're asking whether I'm seeing your cousin behind your back, I'm not."

"If you're asking whether somebody wants you to think so, I'd look at who sent it."

His jaw was working.

He did not say his mother's name.

He did not need to, because I saw him think it, and then shove it away.

"This stays with me," he said, closing the folder. "You will not be asked to carry it again."

"Thank you, sunbae," I said.

"Do not call me that," he said.
