Chapter 16: Do What You Want

He ran me a bath that night and sat on the edge of the tub with his sleeves rolled up.

He washed my back slowly and with great care.

I let him for ten minutes.

I was twenty-four weeks gone, with a cut on my knuckle from the brass window latch.

My hands would not stop shaking in the warm water.

I looked at the tender curve of his hands on my shoulders.

I looked at the lake black behind him.

"Stop," I said.

He stopped at once, sponge in hand, with water running down his wrist.

"Did I hurt you?" he asked.

"No. I'm not made of glass."

"I know," he said.

"Since the first night you've been careful with me. I know there's an animal in there. I want him."

His eyes went very dark.

"Marit."

"Do what you want," I said.

I said it in the voice.

I felt it leave me, clear and hard.

"Don't wait for me to tell you. Don't be gentle because you think I need it. Whatever you do tonight, you do because you want to, and if I don't like it I'll tell you."

He sat very still.

I watched it land on him.

I watched his face change as he understood what I'd done.

The order I had given was not a leash.

It was the end of one.

I saw something come up in his eyes that I had never seen there.
