Chapter 18: The Harvest Gathering
Cedar Hall stood at the end of a forest road east of North Bend, a long, windowless room of black timber under old cedar beams.
On the night of the Harvest Moon it held every Alpha in the Cascades.
I came in the long way round.
The old Speaker had taught me.
I walked the outer ring of the hall with my hand on my belly and Wynne at my shoulder.
She wore her pink Crocs, because she had flatly refused to wear anything else, and every head in the room turned to follow us.
Twenty Alphas sat in tiers along the east wall.
They were big men and a few big women in good suits and leather coats, and one in a ceremonial fur.
They watched me go round them.
Anselm sat in the second tier, in black, with his hands on his knees.
He did not look at me.
We had agreed on it that morning in the car.
He would sit with the Alphas.
He would not rise or speak for me.
He would not touch me until I had said what I had come to say.
I had wanted it that way.
It was the hardest thing I had ever watched him do.
On the north wall sat the bench of the pack mothers, eight women in grey and one empty chair.
