Chapter 21: The Oath

Hedda spoke well.

I will give her that, as I gave Gunnar his due.

She stood in the ninth chair with her hands folded, and her voice never rose.

She told the hall, in that clear, grave, reasonable way, that the Moot had just seen a power it did not understand.

"The Word has been held by mothers for four hundred years under a rule of restraint," she said. "That restraint was the bench's work. Tonight a woman with no pack and no teaching has revealed it to every Alpha in the Cascades, and she has done it by turning it on a man in a hospice, a garage and a nursery."

"She did not," Anselm said.

"I am not speaking to you, darling."

"She has not once..."

"Anselm." Hedda did not look at him. "This child will be born into the hands of a mother who can order its father to sit, and kneel, and stay. Who will she order next? The Moot must ask. I say that for the child's safety, for the hearth's, the child should be declared to the Strandberg Hall, to be raised by a woman of the bench who understands the weight of what she holds."

It was elegant.

She had turned the room that had just given her son a standing ovation into a jury.
