Chapter 24: Go
Ida ate her first dinner on the third Sunday of April, in a high chair, with orange sweet potato up to her eyebrows.
She did it with the grave concentration she gave everything.
She took the spoon in her fist and put it in her ear.
"That's the wrong end," said Wynne, filming.
"She's a Falkner," I said. "We find our own way to the mouth."
"She has her father's chin," said the Beta from the doorway, with enormous gloom. "I've seen her eat a dinner roll. It's frightening."
He had been given custody of the baby for the night and had arrived at four to complain about it.
Anselm sat on the floor beside the high chair with his shirtsleeves rolled and a smear of orange on his beard, holding out a cloth.
Ida looked at the cloth.
She looked at him.
Then she did a thing I had been told she would do, and had not believed.
She put both hands on the tray, pushed herself up in the chair, wriggled free of the strap, and slid out onto the floor.
"Oh my God," said Wynne.
Ida stood.
She was six months old and she stood on the kitchen floor with her feet wide apart and her fists clenched, wobbling.
She took a step.
She took another.
She took a third, straight across my linoleum, and fell flat into her father's lap with a crow of triumph.
Nobody said a word.
