Chapter 5: Visiting Hours

I worked nights at a hospice in Shoreline, in a building that smelled of lavender and floor wax, where the only people who ever shouted were the families.

Room Six had the oldest patient I had ever nursed.

She was ninety-one, tiny and fierce, and she had been a pack mother in the Cascades before I was born.

She had no relatives left, only a long line of wolves who sent flowers.

That Thursday one of them came in person.

I was at the nurses' station charting when I smelled him, cedar and cold air and a sweet edge of woodsmoke.

I looked up to see a man in a fleece vest walking down the corridor with a bunch of yellow tulips.

He was tall and rangy, with sandy hair that stuck up at the crown and a smile that sold trucks.

Every nurse on the floor looked at him twice.

"I'm sorry to come outside visiting hours," he said to me. "I'm Gunnar. I knew her when I was a pup."

"Room Six," I said. "Fifteen minutes. She tires."

"Of course."

He stayed twenty.

I stood outside the door and listened to her cough, and to his voice, low and warm, talking about someone's wedding in 1987.

When he came out, he stopped beside me and let the door close.

"You're good with her," he said.

"It's the job."

"No, it isn't." He smiled. "I run a pack of three hundred, and I couldn't find five people who sit with a dying wolf and don't check their phones."

I didn't answer.

"Marit Falkner," he said. "Lone wolf, Montana, no pack, no mate, a very nice house in Ballard with a blue door. I hope you don't mind that I know. It's a small Moot."
