Chapter 6: The Guest Wing

I woke on Sunday morning with my feet in a puddle.

My bed was an island.

The hallway was a creek.

The cedar chest sat in two inches of brown water, and my mother's blue kettle floated past the bathroom door.

"Wynne!" I yelled.

She came out of the second bedroom in her sleep shirt.

She had apparently put on her pink Crocs before she opened her eyes.

"Oh, no," she said. "Oh, no, no, no."

The pipe under the house had burst in the night.

Not leaked.

Burst, at a joint in the crawlspace, with the fitting twisted clean off the main.

Wynne crawled in with a flashlight and came back out grey-faced.

"Marit," she said. "There are scratches on the metal."

"What kind of scratches?"

"Four of them. Parallel. About this far apart." She held up her fingers, and they were wider than a dog's.

I sat down on the porch step with my feet in a plastic bag.

A man had been under my house in the dark.

Someone had known where my blue door was.

Someone had known exactly how to get me out of the one place I'd spent three years paying for.

Hedda had said it in my kitchen.

An unhearthed mother is a gift to any Alpha with a hand out.

I had not planned to be unhearthed by Sunday.

I called Anselm because I was too angry to be proud.

He picked up on the first ring, and the whole conversation took under two minutes.

"I'm coming," he said.

"You're not coming. Term one," I said.

"Then I'm sending someone to do what you tell them. The house will be dry by Wednesday. There's a wing at mine with a door that locks from the inside, and the key is on your side. Take it or don't."

"Term one says..."

"Term one says nobody moves you anywhere," he said. "I'm not moving you. I'm offering you a wall to sleep behind while your own are fixed. You can call it a codicil."
