Chapter 7: The Mother's Word
"You can put the cup down," I said.
He didn't.
"Why are you standing in the hall at three in the morning?"
"You told me to stay out of your wing," Anselm said.
"I told you not to come in. I didn't tell you to stand there until sunrise."
"I know."
His voice had gone thin and careful, and a muscle was jumping in his jaw.
"Marit," he said, "I'd like you to say something to me. Anything. An order."
"What?"
"Something small. Humor me."
I should have gone back to bed.
Instead I stood in my socks on the cold floor, and a feeling I couldn't name moved under my ribs, the feeling of a door in a house I had lived in for years that I'd never once opened.
"Come here," I said.
He took three steps, straight down the corridor, and stopped an arm's length from me.
He had not hesitated, and he had not decided.
He had simply gone.
"Stop," I said.
He was already still.
"Turn around."
He turned around and showed me his back.
"Stop that," I said, and my voice cracked. "Turn back. Don't do that."
He turned back.
His face was grey.
"What is happening to you?" I said.
"Tell me to put the cup down," he said.
"Why..." I said.
"Please."
"Put the cup down," I said.
He put it down on the carpet, saucer and all, and the tea spilled.
He did it while he was still saying, in the same steady voice, "Marit, I want you to understand that this is not..."
He finished the whole sentence.
His hands put the cup down anyway.
"It isn't me," he said. "I mean, I'm here, and I heard you, and I disagreed with you. I'd have kept the cup. But my hands did it."
The door to the second bedroom opened.
Wynne stood in the gap in her sleep shirt, with her hair standing straight up and one pink Croc on.
"Am I dreaming?" she said. "Or did the Alpha just put a teacup down because you said so?"
