Chapter 8: House Rules

I spent Monday night on shift, charting by lamp, and I did not sleep at all when I got home.

By Tuesday evening I had made a list.

I wrote it on the back of a hospice menu, in pen, at the kitchenette counter in the north wing.

I carried it down the corridor and across the lawn to the kitchen.

Anselm stood there with a mug in his hand and his shirt-cuffs turned back.

He put the mug down when he saw me.

"Sit," he said, and then closed his mouth.

"You can't order me, remember?"

"I know. I'm sorry. I'm told I do that."

Wynne, who was eating cereal at the island at six in the evening, said, "He does that."

I laid the menu on the marble.

"New rules," I said. "One. I don't use it on you. Not for anything. If I say something sharp and you feel it take, you tell me and I take it back."

"Agreed," he said.

"Two. You don't get to be a martyr about it. If you're standing in a corridor for six hours, you say so, in a loud voice."

"I'd rather not make it a habit," he said.

"Three. It doesn't change how we decide things. You still have a mouth. If I'm wrong, you say I'm wrong."

"I've never had any trouble with that," he said.

"Four." I looked at the menu. "It stays between the three of us."

"And my mother?"

"What about her?"

"She knew," Anselm said. "She said it on your doorstep. She'd seen it before."

"Then talk to her," I said. "That's your job. Mine is to be a person who doesn't use this on you."

Wynne put her spoon down.

"Okay, I'm going to ask the question nobody's asking," she said. "Can you test it once? Just once, one tiny thing, so we know what it feels like? For science?"

"No," I said.

"One little thing."

"Wynne."

"I'd like to know," Anselm said slowly.
