Chapter 13: The Truth in Bed Four

Livia sent for me the next afternoon.

A nurse found me in the cafeteria and said the patient in OB bed four would not take her medicine until I came.

Kirk walked me to the wing and stopped at the door.

"I'll be at the end of the hall," he said. "Say the word and I'm in the room."

"I'm not scared of her."

"I know. I'm scared of me, if I hear what she says to you."

Livia lay propped on three pillows with a monitor strapped across her belly.

The lace shawl was gone, and so was the wheelchair.

She looked smaller, and I did not let myself notice it.

"Is Mom out there?" she asked.

"Dad's in the waiting room. Mom is with the chaplain."

"I told the desk she can't come in. I said it three times."

"Why?"

"Because she's the one who told me what to say to you." Livia's voice was thin. "Sit down, Gin. Please."

I stayed on my feet.

"Say it," I said. "All of it, once, and don't leave out the part that makes you look bad."

She pressed her lips together and nodded.

"It started at Christmas."

"I know it started at Christmas. I can count."

"You were at the venue every weekend, so he drove me home from choir. The second week, he came in and stayed."

The monitor ticked beside her, quick and steady.

"He told me you were the plan and I was the truth," she said. "He said the board liked a teacher for a wife, and he'd picked you for that."

I had thought nothing else could hurt, and I was wrong.

"Go on."

"In February I was sick every morning. Mom took me to a clinic in Marlow County so no one on post would see. When she came back she wasn't angry. She was happy."
