Chapter 20: Guilty
Ginny's POV
The courtroom on post had a flag, a long table of officers in dress uniform, and three rows of reporters.
Kirk sat in the first row, in his dress blues, with his hat on his knee.
Ansel sat at the defense table with his lawyer, and he looked at me as I took the stand.
I put my hand on the book and swore.
The prosecutor took me through the morning in an hour.
The coffee cart, the cup, the cot, the white bench, and the ring I gave away.
When he sat down, the defense lawyer stood up and buttoned his gray jacket.
"Miss Phelps. You've told this panel that you are the victim of a crime."
"Yes."
"You have also told the Inspector General that you kissed the commanding general of this post."
The reporters leaned forward as one.
"I did," I said. "In my grandmother's kitchen, during a storm. He stopped me."
"He stopped you."
"He said he couldn't, while the man he commanded was a case and I was a witness. He kept to that for weeks."
"But you were attracted to him."
"Yes."
"Before the wedding?"
"No," I said. "I was engaged. I had never spoken to him until I walked off the church lawn with a cup in my hand."
"A woman who wants a different man," the lawyer said smoothly, "might see a convenient way to end an engagement."
"A woman who wants a different man," I said, "says so. She doesn't wake up behind a tent."
A short sound went through the room, almost a laugh.
The lawyer's color rose.
"Miss Phelps, isn't it true that you resented your sister?"
"No."
"Your whole life, she was the one who got attention."
"My whole life I gave it to her," I said. "I held her hand at school pickup and I read to her in the dark. I would have given her this wedding if she had asked me."
I looked at Livia, in the second row, with her hands over her stomach.
